1st Annual Bert Cotton Memorial Tournament - Reflections and Results
On Saturday, April 3, we hosted the first ever PDGA-sanctioned C-tier event in the Coachella Valley. This was the 1st Annual Bert Cotton Memorial Tournament and was held at our beautiful temporary course at Palm Royale Country Club in La Quinta, CA.
First and foremost, the inspiration behind this tournament was to celebrate the life of our dear friend, Bert Cotton. He was a popular and influential figure throughout the Southern California disc golf scene, especially out here in the desert. He co-founded Helix Disc Golf and has been instrumental in helping grow the sport in our area. Sadly, we lost Bert around this time last year. We thought it was only fitting to host this tournament in his memory, to allow his local legacy to live on. This will be an annual tournament that we hope gets bigger and better each year.
We had 72 players come out to play in the tournament, representing 10 different pro and amateur divisions. We played a shotgun format with groups starting on all 18 holes. We played a morning round, took a lunch break and then played an afternoon round to determine the final winners in each division. The weather was a bit hot, but it sure seemed like everyone had a blast and the event went as smoothly as we could have hoped.
We would also like to take the time to thank our hole sponsors, as well as Innova, who supported the event with some killer custom discs for the amateur player packs. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event so great, and we can’t wait to see you all out here again next year!
